STUDIO 2a

In the Round // WSOA // Fall 2017 // Instructor: Joshua Stein

An in-depth analytical study is made of everyday domestic, work, and recreational rituals through written research and case study, with an emphasis on spatial accommodation of program through materiality, finish, structure, and form. Projects set in limited contexts emphasize the influence of internally driven relationships, with a special focus on hybrid programming.

Symmetry can be described as a reflection or rotation of similar geometries across a specified central axis with identical proportions. The role of symmetry in my project is mainly to define circulation within it. Most of my symmetry is radial and proportional that both are derived from one center axis. Proportion is based on measurements that are selected as standard and repeated throughout the entire work. This structure uses two forms of symmetry for its interior and exterior using two main sets of diagrams to complete one structure. The plan diagram is based on hexagonal shapes tangent to the exterior circle, that later in the z direction creates scaling symmetry. The spatial organization in my project is translated by the diagram of the precedent that serves as a guide to create sections (rooms) within my form. This helps my form not to break symmetry when the program is introduced because all the niches within my project will be created using the linear geometry of the precedent and variant that help produce the structure. Symmetry is impacted by the site because it may break it in certain facades of the structure.
